«Chucho» is the most common colloquial word for dog or canine in Guatemala. It is the preferred word over «perro» in everyday conversations and is one of the distinctive markers of Guatemalan Spanish.
Additionally, the colloquial phrase “ser chucho” in Guatemala means someone who is greedy and tries to keep the biggest share of something without thinking about others. Someone who is “bien chucho” is a selfish, stingy, and therefore also cheap person.
Usage
As a synonym for “dog,” «chucho» is used in virtually all informal contexts. It is the natural way to refer to a canine on the street, at home, or in the neighborhood. Saying «chucho» instead of «perro» is one of the most distinctive marks of Guatemalan Spanish.
As an adjective meaning “stingy,” it is used to criticize someone who won’t share or spend money. It can range from a lighthearted complaint to a serious critique, depending on context.
