Definition
“Fanfa” is a colloquial Guatemalan noun that describes a proud, show-off person who brags too much about their achievements or belongings. It is the shortened form of “fanfarrón”, although in Guatemalan speech it is often used in a teasing or mildly reproachful tone, not always as a harsh insult.
Usage
The word is used to refer to:
- Show-off person: “El Jorge es bien fanfa, siempre presumiendo que es el mejor en todo” (Jorge is a real fanfa, always boasting that he’s the best at everything)
- Boasting about something: “Deja de andar de fanfa con tu carro nuevo” (Stop showing off about your new car)
- Affectionate reproach: “¿Para qué la fanfa si después te vas a caer?” (Why the fanfa if you’re going to fall on your face later?)
Origin
“Fanfa” comes from “fanfarrón”, a Spanish word for someone who shows off their courage or abilities. In Guatemalan Spanish the root was shortened and generalized, shifting from describing the braggart to anyone who simply shows off or takes too much pride.
Variations
- Fanfa: Common form, used for both men and women
- Fanfarrón / Fanfarrona: Original form, less used in everyday speech
- Andar de fanfa: Verbal expression to describe showing off
Cultural context
In Guatemala, “fanfa” is heard in the plaza, on the sports field and at home. It is often used among friends to humble whoever is puffing their chest, without reaching the level of an insult; the tone and the relationship between the speakers define whether it is a joke or a criticism.
