Definition

“Sabroso” keeps its standard meaning of something delicious or tasty, but in Guatemalan colloquial speech it has widened to two other uses: describing a physically attractive person, and referring to someone bold, lively and fond of dancing or fun.

Usage

The word is used in three senses:

  • Food: “El churrasco con guacamol quedó sabroso” (The steak with guacamol turned out sabroso)
  • Attractive person: “La cantante nueva está bien sabrosa” (The new singer is really sabrosa)
  • Bold and lively person: “Ese muchacho es bien sabroso, todo el tiempo anda bailando y echando relajo” (That guy is really sabroso, always dancing and goofing around)

Variations

  • Sabroso / Sabrosa: Changes according to grammatical gender
  • Bien sabroso: Emphasizes the degree, whether of flavor or attractiveness
  • Sabrozón: Exaggerated colloquial form (something or someone very sabroso)

Cultural context

“Sabroso” is a double-edged word in Guatemala: when talking about food it is a pure compliment, but applied to a person it depends on the context and who says it — it can sound like a pick-up line or a rebuke for being too bold. At parties and marimba gatherings, whatever is sabroso invites you to enjoy, which is why the word goes hand in hand with good eating and good dancing.
